What makes a good YouTube channel name?
Short enough to say out loud, clear enough to spell after hearing it once, and specific enough that viewers know what they are subscribing to. Two or three words is the sweet spot. Avoid numbers, unusual spellings, and anything you would have to correct in every conversation.
What are YouTube’s handle rules?
A handle is 3 to 30 characters and can contain letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, and periods. It must be unique across YouTube. If your first choice is taken, adding a topic word usually reads better than adding digits.
How do I check whether a name is available?
Click any @handle in the results — it opens youtube.com/@handle. If the page loads a channel, the handle is taken; if it 404s, it is probably free. Also search the plain name on YouTube and Google to catch anyone using it without owning the handle.
Can I change my channel name later?
Yes. YouTube lets you change your channel name and handle, though frequent changes are rate-limited and each one confuses returning viewers and breaks links people have shared. It is much cheaper to get it close to right at the start.
Should my channel name include a keyword?
It helps discovery if it fits naturally — a name like "Practical Woodworking" tells YouTube and viewers what the channel covers. Do not force it: a keyword-stuffed name reads as spam and is harder to build a brand on than a clean, memorable one.
Should I use my own name?
Use it if you are the product — coaching, commentary, and personality-led channels benefit from it. Use a brandable name if you might bring on other presenters, sell the channel, or expand past the original topic.
